Celebrating Neurodivergence

We are amidst a revolution of understanding neurodiversity. The DSM-5 enabled clinicians to diagnose autism and ADHD contemporaneously. 50-80% of children diagnosed with Autism also met the criteria for ADHD (Gadow et al., 2005). Cultural attitudes towards communication and social expectation have historically caused an entire demographic in society to be marginalised. Enabling our new generations with the tools and frameworks to perform in a way that works with their brain is a game changer. Autistic people have autistic social skills and socialise differently. Autisic people communicate in totally acceptable autistic ways but the education is missing in society to understand and accept this quality and style of functioning. Early diagnosis is an important feature to avoid a decline in mental health (Oredipe et al., 2022) but educating society is just as important. Being proactive with neurodivergence is essential for ensuring an inclusive future for an undervalued population.
